6 Slow Things: Bonnie Wright

6 Slow Things: Bonnie Wright

While my own house is once again upside down, my pantry is sprawled across various corners of the house, and half my kitchen is out on the farm (we’re limewashing our entire downstairs), I’m thrilled to share a less chaotic home with you, and the second guest of our series, 6 Slow Things.

Like many of my new friendships in recent years, Bonnie and I first connected via Instagram. In 2022, we both published our first books, books born from our love of nature, making with our hands and living life as much in harmony with the Earth as possible. We sent copies of our books to one another, loved them, and have been in touch ever since.

Bonnie’s book, Go Gently, is a thoughtful and practical guide to sustainable and earth conscious living, both at home, and on your travels.

A fellow born and raised Londoner, Bonnie also now lives overseas too, having swapped London life for life in Los Angeles.

An actress, artist and filmmaker, Bonnie has in recent years also built the most beautiful platform and community, Hello Earthling, which seeks to inspire and support families in raising Earth loving children with a deep sense of connection and belonging to our planet through a number of offerings including a children’s podcast, community events and weekly newsletters.

I had the pleasure of working on a Hello Earthling event with Bonnie, sharing visions and ideas over WhatsApp and bringing them to life together in real life, and her calm energy, love of animals and spending time with her young son and husband out in nature, truly ‘going gently’ chime so much with me.

I’m super excited to quiz her on her 6 Slow things and share them with you.

Hi Bonnie! Thank you so much for joining us.

1) Tell us about your home, where is it? And what was the first thing that drew you to it?

Our home is nestled within the Santa Monica mountains surrounded by oak trees. It was build by a family in the late 1940s who lived there till 2017. It has such beautiful charm and craftsmanship . Lots of wooden paneled walls and stoned stairways. We were drawn to the cosy cabin vibe of the home and the beautiful 3.5 acres its on of mostly wild native landscape.

2) Tell us about a special family ritual that you enjoy all together?

A daily ritual of our's is walking up our hill with our two dogs, smelling the beautiful native plants, spotting hawks flying overhead and admiring the surrounding mountains.

3) Describe your perfect gentle day, what do you do, where do you go, what do you eat, make, wear?

My perfect day would be packing up the car and heading to our local beach with homemade sandwiches and snacks. Making sandcastles with Elio, finding shells and making up games. The cherry on the cake would be getting a moment to go surfing. Something I love to do but since becoming a mum haven't been doing as often as I used to.

4) What’s the first thing you do when you get home from travelling?

Cuddle my animals. Then make a cup of tea and a slice of toast with lots of butter and peanut butter. Depending on the time of day sit in the garden with my family or enjoy a hot bath and being back in my own bed with a good book.

5) What’s your favourite thing you own, that you bought or were given second hand?

One of my most loved possessions is an embroidered woollen blanket that my parents designed in the late 80s for their brand Wright & Teague. It’s a beautiful cream colour with tassels woven in Yorkshire with woolmark certified wool and embroidered in Nottingham. The embroidered designs are of horses, people, the sun, hearts and feel free spirited like my parents. It reminds me of a time when materials were locally grown and in the case of wool, spun, dyed and woven into fabric in traditional local designs to make warm clothes and household textiles.

6) What LES SIX piece would you most like to bring home?

I love all of your baskets! Each a beautiful unique shape. They are such a versatile piece that I would take with me shopping at our local market or use it to collect items like leaves, flowers and acorns from our garden to bring inside to play and craft with.

I’m so grateful to Bonnie for sharing her Slow things with us.

You can find her on Instagram, explore Hello Earthling, which also has a Substack and podcast, and enjoy her book Go Gently here.
